Fan-Dabi-Dozi Fish and Chips

David Hanbury has teamed up with local celebrities, the Krankies, to produce a series of new ads for Hanbury’s Famous Fish and Chips of Babbacombe.

When David was planning some new radio ads he suddenly thought of his very good friends, Ian and Janette, asked them if they’d like to take part and they were delighted to. The Krankies have been in show business for over 40 years, starring in many TV and stage shows, travelling the world and winning all sorts of awards.  They still travel extensively and regularly appear in panto but their home is in Torquay.

Janette says “We’ve known David for years and were only too happy to feature in his new series of ads. We had a great time recording the ads at Heart and Tim Fortune, their Senior Creative Manager, did a wonderful job of writing some ads that really captured what David was trying to achieve but in a very Krankies style.”

David said “I’m delighted with the ads.  They’re wonderful fun and I think will go down well with our customers.  In fact, I’d go as far as to say that they’re fan-dabi-dozi.”  He added “Ian and Janette have been very supportive of me and always come along to our June Music Festival on Babbacombe Downs and help entertain the crowds.  It’s brilliant to hear a marquee full of 500 people laughing and having a good time and that’s what the Krankies bring to any event.”

The ads will appear throughout the year on Heart Radio and Palm FM and there’s a special extra one to promote the Music Festival which this year will be on Sunday 22 June and will again be raising money for local charity, the Torbay Holiday Helpers Network.

The Krankies themselves remain a very busy couple and have recently appeared on television in the final episode of this series of Benidorm which was shown on ITV on Thursday 13 February.

Fun and Fundraising at Hanbury’s Famous Fish and Chips

Hanbury’s Famous Fish and Chips of Babbacombe raised over £800 for Rowcroft on Wednesday 16 October with a special event in aid of the charity as part of Rowcroft’s Dine at Mine campaign.

The famous fish and chip takeaway and restaurant had medium cod and chips on offer all day and then gave over 25% of the proceeds to Rowcroft Hospice.  At the same time there was a silly hat competition and the best 25 silly hats were awarded a £25 Hanbury’s restaurant voucher each.

David Hanbury said “As always we had great support from our customers.  Everyone seems to be very happy to support our charity days and I am extremely grateful for that.  I have a fantastic team here and everyone really pulls out all the stops when we do this kind of event.  It’s a lovely, friendly atmosphere and our customers seem to appreciate that.”  He added “People really got into our silly hat competition too and we had all sorts of amazing creations through the doors.”  David and his team all joined in the silly hat wearing and, once the frying was over, sat down to look through all the pictures of people in silly hats and pick their 25 winners.

David said “Rowcroft is an amazing place and I’m only to happy to be able to support it in this way. Local people really appreciate having such a wonderful organisation in the area and we had Rowcroft buckets for donations which will be given straight to Rowcroft and will hopefully contain lots more money.”

Hanbury’s Rowcroft Charity Day

Hanbury’s Famous Fish and Chips of Babbacombe has announced a special charity day in aid of Rowcroft Hospice as part of the charity’s Dine at Mine campaign.

On Wednesday 16 October, in both the takeaway and restaurant, Hanbury’s is not only taking 35% off the price of medium cod and chips, it’s then giving 25% of the proceeds (net of VAT) to Rowcroft Hospice.  David Hanbury said “We like to support Rowcroft with some kind of charity event each year.  Rowcroft provides such a vital service locally and is run by a fantastic group of people.  I am only too delighted to be able to join in with their Dine at Mine campaign and hope that we have a bumper day of serving fish and chips.  By cutting the price for the day, it also acts as a thank you to all our regular customers and hopefully brings some new people along to give Hanbury’s a try.”

David added “This year we’re adding a bit of extra fun to the occasion with a silly hat competition. We’re hoping that people will enter into the spirit and come along for their fish and chips wearing a silly hat.  We’ll be taking photos all day and, at the end of the event, will pick our favourite 25 silliest hats.  Each winner will then receive a £25 voucher to spend in Hanbury’s restaurant.”

As well as being famous for its great fish and chips, Hanbury’s is also well known locally for doing all sorts of fundraising which David says the staff really enjoy being a part of.  He says “I have a great team here at Hanbury’s and they’re all very keen on the idea and ready to get dressed up and have a bit of fun whilst fundraising.”

The event will run in the takeaway and restaurant from 11.30am to 2pm and again from 5pm to 9pm.  For more information visit www.hanburys.net or look on their Facebook or Twitter pages.

More Awards for Hanbury’s of Babbacombe

After winning the 2013 Independent Takeaway Fish and Chip Shop of the Year for the South West David Hanbury and the team at Hanbury’s Fish and Chips in Babbacombe are now celebrating coming third in the whole of the UK after receiving the award at a prestigious ceremony at the Lancaster London Hotel on Thursday 24 January.  The awards, organised by Seafish, the authority on seafood, champion the diverse talents and skills in the UK food service and fish frying trade and are designed to showcase the high standards within the industry. The trophy was presented to Hanbury’s by comedian, and host for the evening, Rory Bremner.

Having won the regional section yet again, Hanbury’s went to the awards ceremony with the 9 other finalists where David Hanbury and General Manager Jake Thorn gave a presentation to a panel of judges before taking questions.  David said “I am absolutely delighted that we have won the regional section of this award so many times, the first being back in 1988.  The other finalists all have fantastic establishments and to be considered by the judging team to be such ambassadors for the trade is something we’re very proud of.” Manager Jake Thorn said “Working at Hanbury’s is a real team effort and entering these awards and doing so well gives all the staff a great sense of achievement.  It’s nice to have our hard work and commitment to great customer service, along with sourcing and cooking the best quality food, acknowledged by the industry experts.”

Hanbury’s was recently asked to showcase in a special film made for the BBC giving an insight into how to make some of the best fish and chips in the country.  The film features a number of the staff and shows just what it takes to produce such consistently great food.  To see the film visit http://www.bbc.co.uk/food/0/21167649

David added “I consider Hanbury’s to be at the heart of our local community and the success of the business gives us the opportunity to get involved in fundraising and community work.  During our presentation to the judges we took the opportunity to talk about some of the special events we have put on, including the Hanbury’s Fish and Chips on the Downs Music Festival and how those various events have raised nearly £70,000 for great causes over the past six years.”

Preparations for the 2013 Music Festival are already underway and on Sunday 23 June Babbacombe Downs will once again be host to a fabulous marquee with a day of great live entertainment lined up and, of course, fish and chips.  For now, it’s home to Babbacombe but not much rest as the army of regular customers want their fish and chips.

Fish and Chips on the menu for the Babbacombe Memory Café members

The Babbacombe Memory Café members, who meet every Tuesday at St Anne’s Hall in Babbacombe, were treated to a fish and chip lunch over the road at Hanbury’s, courtesy of owner David Hanbury, just before Christmas.

The Memory Café is run by Alzheimer’s Society and is open to all those who have dementia, their carers and family members. Denis Johnson, a volunteer at the Babbacombe Memory Café, said “Each week from 1.30pm to 3.30pm we set up our café in St Anne’s Hall and have talks about all sorts of topics along with refreshments and entertainment, as well as an opportunity to meet others in a similar position and make new friends and bonds. He added “There are currently 800,000 people affected by dementia in the UK and this is expected to rise. Many people feel quite isolated and the café provides the ideal place to make new friends and relax.”

David Hanbury had recently given a talk about his 30 years in the Fish and Chips trade at the Memory Café and was only too delighted to invite them over for lunch. He said “I received a very warm welcome at St Anne’s Hall and it was lovely to have so many members and carers over to the restaurant for lunch. The Memory Café is a fantastic local resource and provides a really wonderful service.” Denis said “We were thrilled to receive David’s kind invitation and 39 of us enjoyed a lovely lunch at Hanbury’s.”

Anyone connected with dementia is welcome at any of the three cafés set up in Torbay. There is one in Paignton, one in Brixham and one in Babbacombe. Alzheimer’s Society would also like to hear from anyone who is prepared to volunteer to help out. Volunteers are always welcome but the Brixham café is in particular need of some extra assistance.
