Local Businesses Help Bring Learning to Life

Children from Homelands Primary School were recently treated to a slightly different way of learning when teacher Sarah Butler came up with an enterprising way to teach them about some of the food they eat.

Sarah was running a project with some of the children in Homelands Nursery Class which started with them making food for the birds in their gardens.  The children decided that the birds would like mackerel and the subject of fish and chips came up!

Fortunately, two local businesses were only too happy to help Sarah and the children with their project.  They first visited D&H Fisheries fishmongers in St Marychurch and found out all about various fish, including getting to handle and study a dory, as well as exploring the world of prawns and sardines.

After that it was over to Hanbury’s where staff were only too happy to show the children the process of taking fish and potatoes and transforming them into the fried fish and chips they sell so many of.  Sarah said “It was a pleasure to be a part of a wonderful community partnership between Homelands Nursery and Hanbury’s. It is brilliant to know that community spirit is still strong in Torquay.”

David Hanbury said “We like to get involved in community projects when we can.  The children from Homelands were delightful and are hopefully now much better informed about where some of their food comes from. Sarah did a great job with this project which really seemed to engage the children.”

Sarah added “The wonderful team at Hanbury’s spent time showing the children the process of how they made fish and chips. The group of 8 children and their parents were then treated to a fabulous meal in Hanbury’s restaurant.  We would like to thank Hanbury’s and D and H Fisheries for helping make learning come alive for the children at Homelands Nursery.”
